Research Awards are offered to faculty members of Korean universities or research institutes and to professionals in education, government, business, the media and other professions in Korea. The purpose of these awards is to provide opportunities for non-degree study and research which will enhance existing academic or professional expertise for future career development and contribution after returning to Korea. Accordingly, the proposed research must entail substantive exchanges of academic and professional expertise between Koreans and Americans, rather than just facilitate observation visits or travel for personal enrichment.

For both academic and professional (or non-academic) researchers, these awards are divided into mid-career and senior research categories based on the background and qualifications of the applicants. Applicants for Mid-Career research awards are typically associate professors or the professional equivalent and for senior awards are full professors or the professional equivalent.

The Research portion of the Lecturing/Research awards addresses the same goals as those of the Research-only awards, but the lecturing aspect provides an opportunity to teach about Korea in an American university. In the placement of Lecturing/Research grantees at American universities, the greater emphasis is placed on the lecturing assignment.

While maintaining its overall emphasis on "excellence," KAEC will give preference to those applicants whose proposed project in any appropriate academic discipline or professional specialty is most clearly relevant to the current project areas established for the Fulbright program in Korea, i.e. for lecturers, strengthening Korean studies in the U.S., and for researchers, strengthening the study of the USA in Korea.

Mid-Career Research

Experience requirements:

At the time of application, the applicant must have a doctorate or terminal degree for the profession and fit one of the following categories: 1) full-time college or university faculty member who has held the maximum rank of associate professor for no more than 6 years at an accredited university; 2) full-time researchers at an approved research institute for at least 6 and no more than 10 years; 3) currently employed professionals in an eligible field with at least 6 and no more than 10 years of relevant experience beyond the terminal degree. Individuals who have changed status in the last five years may combine the experience from different categories, if the field of study remains the same.

This award is for five months only, beginning any time between August, 2009 and March, 2010.
There are up to fourteen awards available for PY2009-2010.

Senior Research

Experience requirements:

At the time of application, the applicant must have a doctorate or terminal degree and fit one of the following categories: 1) "tenured" faculty member at an accredited university who is full professor or who has held the rank of associate professor for more than of 5 years; 2) full-time researcher who has held an equivalent position in an approved research institute for at least 10 years; 3) currently employed professional in an eligible field with at least 10 years' experience beyond the terminal degree.

This award is for five months only, beginning any time between August, 2009 and March, 2010.
There are up to seven awards available for PY2009 ~ 2010.

Lecturing/ Research

The lecturing and research award is for Korean university faculty in the social sciences, humanities, fine arts, or business who can teach American students about Korea in their discipline. Awardees will be required to teach up to two undergraduate courses PER SEMESTER in their academic field but with content which is related to Korea. Awardees will receive placement for their teaching assignments at Korean studies programs at universities in the U.S. in consultation with the KAEC office and with CIES. Applicants must also submit a research project which they intend to pursue while they are teaching in the U.S. The research project can be within their discipline but should be related to either Korea or America or a comparative perspective. Applicants should make research proposals that can be carried out at any university, as they will be at only one university, the university of their Korean studies lecturing, during their grant period. Travel to other locations during breaks at the grantee's expense is, of course, permissible.

Applicants must submit 1) syllabi for two courses that you propose to teach related to Korea in your discipline; and 2) a research proposal.

The Korean-American Educational Commission and CIES in the U.S. will be responsible for arranging a lecturing affiliation for the grantee of this award.

Experience requirements:

At the time of application 1) minimum of 5 years' full time teaching experience at an accredited Korean university following the receipt of the Ph.D. degree; 2) excellent comprehensive English ability

This award is for one academic year (10 months), beginning in August 2009.
There are up to two awards for PY2009-2010.
